The name – Heijoshin – was chosen for both its literal meaning and also from personal experiences whilst training in Japan. The phrase can be split into three to help understand it:
平 Hei – peaceful, calm
常 Jo – constant, continuous
心 Shin – heart, spirit, oneness
Together, the meaning of Heijoshin expands to symbolise ‘a calm spirit even when facing adversity’. This is achieved through constant practice and the cultivation of intellect, emotion and character. We forget that the martial arts were originally for use when one finds himself in grave danger. Only by forging the spirit to accept this moment when life is at its most fragile can we achieve Heijoshin.
